Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez reached the podium for the first time this season by finishing second on the sprint race at Sepang International Circuit, in Malaysia, during the first weekend of the 2012 GP2 Series season.

 

After 22 laps around the track, French team Lotus GP’s driver finished the race in 41 minutes and 10.052 seconds, close behind his teammate James Calado who did it in 41:08.048, while third place was for Dams´ Felipe Nasr in 41:11.488.

“It was very important to drive a smart race because one of the most critical aspects was tire degradation, we knew this was going to be very important in a 22 lap race with no pit stops, so we tried to move up as much as we could from the start.

 

“My best chance to reach P1 was at the start and we did good but not enough to get to the first corner on top, so I focused on looking after my tires and finish the race by being smart and consistent”, said the Mexican.

 

This year’s goal for Esteban and the team is to be consistent and to earn points and they did show the quality of their work in Malaysia where they earned six points in the first race and 12 in the second, closing the weekend with 18 total points during the weekend to position himself in fourth place in the driver’s championship.

 

“This is a good result when you consider my costly mistake in practice, which prevented me from learning the circuit but in the end we recovered and met our goal of getting points in both races, which is what we will be seeking to do throughout the season.

 

“The team is very happy, we all did a good job, James’ race was great and we must continue working on a few things to improve and achieve better results", he added.

 

Next appointment for the Mexican in the GP2 Series will be on the International Circuit of Bahrein on April 20-22 with races 3 and 4 of the season.

 

“The most important thing now is to continue my physical preparation. I am flying back to Mexico in a few days and will be doing some snow sports and just being in shape because Bahrain will be very important for us.

 

“We expect to achieve a good result. I don’t know the track and for that reason the challenge will be similar to what I lived through this weekend in Malaysia”, concluded Esteban.
